“Disability Information Resources Network
for Civil Society in Uzbekistan” Project (DIRN)
Project is funded by the European Commission under TACIS Institution Building Partnership Programme (IBPP)/ Support to Civil Society and Local Initiatives
The main Project objective is to provide informational support to people with disabilities, their families, as well as to organisations and professionals working in various fields related to disability (education, social and professional integration, etc.)
All services provided under this project are free of charge.
Project was initiated and has been implemented by:
- Handicap International – French humanitarian organisation
- Center for Social and Legal Support of People with Spinal Disabilities “STATUS”
- Center for Support of Children with Limited Abilities “Umidvorlik”
- Business Women Association (Kokand)
Project mission:
- Inform and provide consultations on disability issues to people with special needs and their families;
- Provide informational support to organisations and professionals working in the field of disability;
- Provide informational support to organisations that desire to improve their skills and knowledge in the field of disability (training, seminars, exchange of experience, information sharing, etc);
- Contribute to developing and improving collaboration among agencies and professionals working in the field of disability.
Following actions have been planned under the project fraim:
- Establishing Disability Information Resources Center in Tashkent to provide various materials on disability issues (books, manuals, periodicals, handbooks, video materials, etc.) – has been launched in April, 2004 at the address provided below;
- Conducting individual consultations by Project Coordinators provided by local partner organizations (“STATUS”, “Umidvorlik” and BWA);
- Organising seminars, exhibitions, debates, trainings for people with disabilities and organisations working in the field disability;
- Setting up a website of the project – has already been launched at the end of September, 2004;
- Creating a network of disability information resources points in the regions. Three information points in the regions have been set up at following locations:
- Kokand city, in collaboration with BWA, one of the project partners (in April, 2004)
- Karshi city, in collaboration with the Regional Rehabilitation Center (in December, 2004)
- Andijan city, in collaboration with the Regional Library named after Bobur (in December, 2004);
- Publishing a directory that will provide information on organisations working in the field of disability in Uzbekistan along with other useful information on disability issues.
